Amy, Diane made a good point. It was a handler error and she did the right thing. You also did the right thing, Maverick came when called. Even though he didn't recall with your husband, he DID with you and (I think) you did good in praising him. Keep working on his recall and if Maverick does not recall with your husband again, your husband needs to calmly walk over and grab him, then correct him. Or have a drag line on him to correct him from far. Once his recall improves, you can remove the drag line. NEVER, EVER RECALL AND PUNISH.

Hello Diane
Our Fred is just the same as your Pup, Fred is 7 Months old, He sure is a Handful. and like you i am a new beginner to GSDs. and at the age of 67 years last Saturday they certainly give you the run a round, Fred has no malice in him at all except the grabbing hold of my forearm as i said he does not bite down but still marks the arm, I feel once i get him out of this i will have a very intelligent dog, He has tried my patience a fair bit but i am able to keep control of my self, and not get hyped up by what he does, I would guess although he has grown fast is still a pup and he wants to test us out I would never think of parting with him, to do that is to give up and that will never do, an old saying which i go by is,
'Defeat is but for a Day'
'Givng up is Forever'
We must stick with them
Steve
How true, Steve - the same can be said for "adolescent human children". I'm sure that some parents want to give up on their kids when they are in this phase but it is not an option.
That is pretty much how we feel about any animals that we adopt into our home. Another old saying . . . "this too will pass."
