I've read on several BARF lists of vet techs saying they had seen dogs brought in with obstructions. Vet appt. time! Get out the checkbook! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Yes, my young dog had a raw chicken back and ended up with an intestinal and splenic torsion. He had emergency surgery to unwrap his gut that was twisted up around his stomach which cause the spleen to twist. His spleen was twice the size. His intestines were grey and on their way out when the vet did his surgery. He recovered in about two weeks from the surgery. I know a raw diet is a great diet but I won't risk it with him again.
is it possible for a dog to have an obstruction and have normal appetite, normal stools, normal drinking habits, and just cough very very occasionally---like a hacking cough, like she's trying to get something up, but all that comes out is white mucus? i'm asking because my female ate a bone on friday night, and has coughed a little since then, but very infrequently. i've had a dog who had kennel cough, and it seems like that. maybe it's just a coincidence that she got the cough after she ate a hard beef bone, when she normally eats pork and lamb and veal bones....
Many times a dog is unable to digest raw bones if they are not used to them. Probiotic powder and digestive enzymes used prior to and during the switch will usually help this unless the dog has a compromised immune system. Some dogs need their bones ground to make the switch. They are all different. (Hi Scott!) I am constantly researching this topic and I think chicken necks are the easiest for dogs switching, then backs. If you have to grind them at first, so be it. It is light years better for them than processed food. It all depends on what your long term goals are for your dogs, I guess.
I just re-read your post Scott and it sure sounds like kennel cough. As long as she appears normal and is not vomiting and is pooping I would not think it's an obstructon.
Have you taken her temp?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
