I haven't done the pork thing yet, but I have fed mine lamb neck portions. It's too expensive as a staple, but fine for a treat every now and then. I still haven't fed any raw fish yet either. I'm in the Pacific Northwest, so salmon and trout here can cause "salmon poisoning" in dogs, while ocean fish are OK. Salmon poisoning is actually a parasite that attaches to the dog's intestinal lining, causing dehydration and death.
My old Lab/Shep mix got salmon poisoning from munching a dead fish down by the Willamette river (I caught him with the fish, but didn't see if he had eaten any). Within 3 days of the incident, he stopped eating and could not hold down food or liquids. He pulled through thanks to a rigorous course of Tetracycline. So, I'm a little gun shy of the raw fish thing, but one of these days when sole or snapper is cheap, I'll give it a whirl. Until then, the canned mackerel is good enough!
Why do our domestic dog's need these probiotic's to help with digesting food's that they were designed to handle? When i think of natural,i think of wolves and there diet(meat, bone, organ's). Are wolves getting some form of natural probiotic's in there diet's? Maybe from stomach or intestine possibly. Are the meat, bone's,organ's that we feed our domestic dog's missing enzymes that the wolves are getting in there's. Sorry for so many question's but you do seem to be the person to go to on this board when it come's to natural diet's. Thank's for helping us all out with feeding raw!

Hi bk4jon--I am not sure all dogs 'need' probiotics but some sure handle switching to a raw diet better when they are used. I wonder if years and generations of kibble (read-processed and enzyme deficient)raised, over vaccinated and over medicated animals just need a little extra help.
I have been feeding a raw natural diet for over 6 years now but it's the generations of puppies down the road from my raw fed, minimally vaccinated and medicated dogs that should help me to see the difference. (I am assuming there will be a difference, but only time will tell!) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
