Reminder, for all you folks out there with a pup...just thought I'd throw this one out...for newbies especially and anyone else who might have missed this one....
I've been thinking a lot about my last dog MoJo a lot lately...anyway, one thing occured to me about him and that was that he *would* take a bath in the tub, but didn't much like it and carried the look of "oh my GOD what are you DOING...Let me OUT OF HERE NOW" look on his face the whole time.
ANy way, I decided to desensitize my pup Cato to the bathtub (when and if the need arises for inside bath). FUN FUN FUN!!! First, I began by allowing him in the bathroom with water running in the bath. Then, at a later time had him jump in the tub after me, (no water) then of course treat city. (cooked gizzards). Next, run some cool water for him to drink while in there. Finally, I have a dog who is smiling and thrilled to get into the bath! Voila!
Yea, that worked a little better than we expected, so be warned…
1st bath in a laundry sink – Starbuck hated it
1st bath in a tub – Starbuck hated it
2nd bath in a tub – we used sliced ham as a treat – she was MUCH better
3rd bath in a tub – same thing with the ham – doing even better
4th bath in the tub was Monday night – Now she keeps jumping into the bathtub looking for the ham. She must have jumping into the tub 3 times last night alone. We had to take all the bottles of soap and girly stuff out from around the tub.
Buddy started out hating the bath, absolutely hating it. Had to treat him constantly to get him to stay in the tub. Then he discovered it was a cool place to play and get a drink of water. Now when/IF he is in the bathroom with me, I cannot keep him out of the shower. If I want to shower alone, he needs to wait outside (outside the bathroom, or just OUTSIDE).
He loves to play in the water, mud puddles, along the edge of the river.
So far, Cato will only get in the bath if I tell him to get in... Will update someday on this thead when we go through with the actual bath! Then will see how happy and smiling he is! Although he does well with the hose outside, so... hopefully, it will be the same, calm-submissive doggie in the bath....it's in my vision!
We washed both our dogs this weekend - fastened them (one at a time of course) by the leash to the patio post, applied the dog shampoo (I always dilute it about 50% with water first). The gentle spray on the garden hose worked just fine for the rinsing.
Nickie's first washing was when he was only about 6 months old and not nearly as big & strong as he is now - washed him in the walk-in shower in the house (with lots of treats). Could not see myself getting him to do that now that he is over 70 lbs. So for the summertime, the outside arrangement worked perfectly! I inquired at the local groomer and for his size and type of dog, they wanted $32.
