I plan to start my dog on the barf diet. Question is, should I gradually add the barf to the dry food to acclimate the dogs stomach to the barf, Then gradually reduce dry food until totally barf?
Gave my dog a partial turket neck today. She smelled it, licked it and walked away. She didn't come back to it. Do dogs automatically start on barf or is there other methods to get them to eat barf?
If you want to switch gradually, however, feed your pouch dry food in the morning and the barf goodies in the evenings - or vice versa. Just don't mix them together at one meal because dogs digest them totally differently.
Would this apply to pups? My new pup (Baby Yogi) will be here in a few weeks. I'm planning to feed him raw and have been curious about the switch. BTW, to those considering raw but worried about the expense: I found leg quarters for $0.29/lb. this week. 40lbs. for less than $12.00. Less than a 40lb. sack of dog food.

Hi Walt, I am going to be going through the pup switch pretty soon here myself. As I understand cold turkey-switch is best with the little guys too. That is a great price on leg quarters, but I would not feed those to a little pup, weight bearing bones are much harder to chew and they will have more meat than bone to be ideal for a pup. Chicken wings are really ideal, even though they cost more, because you can smack them with a mallet or a rolling pin and the pup can work on the wing for a while satisfying both its urge to chew and its hunger. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> If you haven't read the "Natural Nutrition for Cats and Dogs" that Ed sells, grab a copy and read it before Yogi comes home. It is a small easy to read book and worth the $9.00
Thanks Deanna. I have the book. Agreed it's good. The leg quarters are going in the freezer for later. Gonna start out on necks and wings. Can't wait. 2 more weeks!!

I am switching my dog no natural diet using Ed's and Kymythy's methods. I started with offering her a chicken leg. She was all excited, chewed it all up and left. Next time I gave her just meat cut into pieces. She was again excited and pulled them all out of the bowl and arranged thm artfully on the floormat. I came, picked them up and fed them to her. She ate them all. At this point, few days later she easily consumes big chunks of legs with bones in them. She's really happy at the meal time. But she does her best to avoid vegetables. I dice them really fine, and still she manages to scatter and leave most of them.
I hear tons of bad stories about chicken leg bones doing all kinds of damage to dogs. Anyone else heard them?
