Thanks - I realize it will take time. I do understand the crate process, but as everything you read says smaller is better, it's only natural that I might think that direction. Our house does have one large room that encompasses the living room and kitchen. If I am working in there on the computer and such, I can keep an eye on him and do let him play at that time. He does accompany me outside when I care for my lizards out there, but dogs (or the cat) are not allowed in the snake room or the garage where the rest of the lizards are, so he can't "help" me there, but I understand the concept.
I guess I just need to practice patience - I will probably try the larger kennel, if only to keep him from laying in his urine.
I should be grateful for the things I have - so far Bart and Bodo get along and can play together, this does take a bit of the exercise load off me - though we get plenty of exercise together walking and going to mondioring training twice a week!
