We have loads of coyotes in L.A. county and lived side by side with no problems.
However, my friend's dog was lured out by several of them and attacked, but got away. That dog was never the same after that, she didn't want to come out of the house for months.
I still love them and like the idea that we can share the same space as long as people observe common sense rules like - don't feed them or let them get too comfortable with us. It's a shame the 2 in San Fran had to be shot rather than relocated.
I was just amazed that they got all the way into the middle of SF. Did they walk accross the Golden Gate bridge or take light rail from San Jose? Unlike LA or other areas San Francisco hasnt encroached on anything but common sense since 1860.
Well, one reason coyotes are NOT endangered is that they all paid attention in geography class, LOL -- The Coastal Range runs along the San Andreas earthquake fault through the Santa Cruz Mountains all the way up the SF Peninsula to the beaches of Ft. Funston, Golden Gate Park & the Presidio (that's ONE way Wiley's relatives get into the heart of the City!)...
We hunt coyotes using electronic calls and chunks of chicken. They can be crafty. I live in a rural area with quite a few cattle. Coyotes can take a new calf, not to mention what they do to turkey, fawns etc. Last week, I nearly hit a dog that was chased onto the Interstate by a couple of coyotes. They are just thick through this region.
