I guess one of my neighbors has chemically nuked his house and yard because all of a sudden we have fleas in a major way. I'm not oppossed to using an insecticide to get rid of them, but I would rather not kill everything, only the fleas...Brenna gets her stuff applied on her back every month and we use an organic spray on her to keep them off too, but they'll jump on her, jump off in the house and then it's off to the races with the whole cycle, etc...
anyone have any luck with something organic or a chemical that targets the fleas only?
Diatomaceous earth is great stuff. You can purchase the food grade DE from Revival Animal http://www.revivalanimal.com
It works mechanically be piercing the exoskeleton of the fleas causing them to dehydrate.
Another product that I have had good results with is De Flea by Natural Chemistry. It works similarly to DE by disolving the exoskeleton. I live in South Carolina where we have roving gangs of fleas that will steal your cars and run off with your womenfolk. I don't use any spot on or chemical flea products and we have never had a flea problem. Raw diet that includes garlic and nutritional yeast and Diatomaceous Earth and DeFlea have always kept the litter critters under control. We get the Deflea from a local pet supply store but I think Pet Smart carries it also.
Mike, had a similar problem at my ex's house and lots of cats. ONE cat got out for two hours, and came back with LOTS of friends. Solution? Borax 20 Mule Team Powdered detergent!
Seriously, we sprinkled this stuff everywhere, left it for a few days, and hoovered it up. No more fleas, and none of the cats were harmed in the least by any soap they may have licked up.
A friend who works at an "organic" friendly landscaping company also recommended nematodes to me (to be used in conjunction with DE)- from my understanding they're kind of like microscopic worms that feed on the flea larvae at soil level. Totally non-toxic and they get rid of other garden pests as well. I applied them to my yard with a sprayer-applicator attached the the hose; took about half an hour to do my whole yard. It seems to have helped some... but then again maybe the fleas have all just floated downstream with all this crazy rain...
I have not had this problem but i heard you should change the bag in the vacuum or the filter if bagless after you vacuum fleas. Probably just a precautionary action.
