You HAVE to use a verbal command (steh) for the stand out of motion exercize in schutzhund. If you use a hand signal as well it's a double command.
Susan, were not talking about the “stand” command in a Schutzhund routine… were talking just about training a “stay” command after the sit or down and weather people feel its necessary to train it. The “stand” is a whole other ball of string to knit in the old obedience basket.

I never looked at it as a "stand" command, I guess because he's already standing, so to me it was more of a "steh". Probably just semantics. Anyway, I agree 100% that it is not necessary to teach stay in conjunction with "sit" or down". Also, thanks for acknowledging me. I sort of repeated what I said earlier as I was feeling neglected, ignored & invisible!!!!!
Thanks for everyone's input. We will continue our course. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything for future use.
After reading all the comments etc, I did have a thought. Is it possible to give the dog the stay command and let her be how she wants? Say she is standing and I say stay which would mean, don't leave this spot but stand, sit, down what ever you want. Is that asking for trouble?
But stay means I'm going out through the gate and I want you to stay inside the fence line, or stay in the bed of the truck, or stay in the kitchen, or whatever. The dog is free to sit or stand or down or whatever as long as it 'stays' in the noted proximity.
I pretty much use stay as a boundary command too. It is also a nice addition to your commands in "emergency" situations. For instance if you drop a glass and it shatters "stay" can keep the dog from being injured. I don't see it necessary as an addition to "sit" or "down" though.
