I'm still having issues with my now 14 week old GSD puppy. He still continues to urinate in his crate if left in for more than four hours. Since I work and he has to be confined right now for more than that (even though I come home for lunch) I've thought about using an outdoor run in the interim. If I put him in a secure run during the day while we are gone, will that pose a problem with continuing the housebreaking when we are home? I am concerned about heat, as we live in TX, but I believe if I cover the run with a tarp and maybe provide two buckets of water, it should be fine. If we use the run, I will still come home at lunch, at least in the beginning, until I know for sure he maintains enough water out there and won't overheat.

Using a run will not cause problems with his housebreaking. Make sure that the shade you provide will cover where he will be though. Sometimes as the sun moves, the shade is not even over the run area anymore, but cast beside it.

Believe me, I intend to make sure the run has some shade and plenty of water at all times. I'm a vet tech and we've had two dogs come in in the past couple of weeks with heat stroke/exhaustion. One didn't make it - poor English Bulldog that the owners decided to take jogging. So, I'm a bit paranoid about it. Which leads me to yet another question...Bart likes to play in the water bowl outside (digging in it) so how do I go about providing him water in such a way that he cannot spill it all? We intend to get a Lixit for the faucet, but where the run is isn't near the faucet...any suggestions?

Well, a lixit can be hooked to a hose, and if you are on a well, that might be an OK option. I have public ($$) water, so I can't afford to have something leaking or a dog that won't stop playing with a hose nozzle for funsies.
If you can do the hose option, zip ties should work for attaching it to the fence.

There was just a thread about dogs throwing their buckets around:
http://www.leerburg.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/150743/page/1#Post150743
Sorry if there is a better way to get someone to that thread.
Personally, I have a GSD mix who loved to carry the bucket around and spill all of the water. We threw a tire in the yard and simply put the bucket in the middle of the tire. We did not have to secure the bucket. This has worked for me.

is well water ok for the dogs? underground water? bore-hole water?
bcoz we have public water and a well, but i never gave the dogs water from the well, but when ever we hose the garden and there is well water lying somewhere they jump for it..they seem to like it more than the clean water i put in there trough.

Kameron, I have two 5gal. stainless steel milk buckets that I hang from the side of the dog run so they cant be spilled. The shape of the bucket tilts it slightly so they can fit their head in. Be careful what you cover it with, use a shade cloth not a tarp. It can be hotter under a tarp. Also what surface is it going to be on? Does he dig other than playing in his bowl?

Good point on the shade cloth. I plan to set up the run next to my privacy fence (or may incorporate part of the existing fence to make the run larger) so hopefully that will increase shade as the sun slants - plus I have a live oak tree in the middle of the yard. It's not huge, but it does provide at least partial shade. He's not really a "spiller" of his water bowl, but he likes to dig in the shallow bowl we have back there. Maybe a bucket hung a little off the ground will discourage digging in the water. He doesn't really dig in the dirt, except when he occaisionally smells something (a grub, maybe?) under the surface. Not a big digger. I just hope he does okay out there, and hopefully the housebreaking will eventually work itself out. I really don't want him to be an outside dog - I want my dogs inside with me! However, I've got to find a happy medium for now - one that sets Bart up for success (no peeing in the kennel) and one that makes it a bit easier on me...

Great picture Kameron. Good to see they get along. Beautiful, both of them.

Thank you. I'm pleased they get along, but we'll have to wait and see how it works once Bart's testosterone kicks in. I was a bit leery of letting them wrestle hard-core until the first time I saw Bodo roll over on his back and let Bart crawl on top of him. Now I know I can let them play together - at least for now! I've got more pics and a couple of videos (no sound, taken on my digital camera) on my myspace http://www.myspace.com/sazkeeper
Still waiting on getting training pics (mondioring) for both of them!
