My 4 month old gsp that I have had for 2 weeks will go as soon as we go outside, and I take her about every three hours. The problem is she won't let me know she has to go out. I keep her on the leash or in view or crated so she is caught in the act every time, but gives no clues beforehand. This is frustrating because she heals sits stays well, but this is going slow.
I asked a similar question a month or two ago, and was advised that it's better to just have a schedule and work on housebreaking that way - not to try to teach a signal.
Well, I have to tell you, I'm stubborn and I didn't listen to that advice. I went digging for ways to teach him to signal...and I regret that very much! I'm now trying to UN-teach the signal!
It's your dog and your choice, but I for one have decided I'm much happier with a schedule than a dog that claws and whines at the doors.
