Question...what are the rules associated with taking a dog in training into a public establishment? I hear Home Depot, Costco and Target allow dogs into their stores but I would like to know if other stores do and if so what is required in taking them in. Do you have to have a permit? License?? I was told as long as the dog is vested and in training that you can take them virtually anywhere w/o incidence. Anyone familiar with this. I am in Arizona btw. Thanks

I actually go in and ask for management and talk to them. I make sure to stay out of the food areas and watch for people who may look a bit nervous (I walk away) or too friendly (I steer CLEAR of them). Just about any store is agreeable here in SD as long as I ask first, explain they are SAR dogs, and they have their vests on.

It depends on what the dog is in training for.
You also need to check out your local health code. Some places that serve/sell food by law have to prohibit dogs except assistance dogs in the establishment. But it all depends on your local code. In MI the code can vary by county.
Do ask before taking your dog in unless the store clearly allows it. Stores have liability issues that they are concerned about, and it is private property. Assistance dogs are allowed under the Americans with Disabilities Act, but just about any other dog (including those in training for therapy and SAR work) doesn't fall under the same guidelines, but I've heard of many stores allowing it after you explain your situation and get permission. My two dogs love our local Tractor Supply Company store - if I don't bring them in everyone asks about them! We also have a few downtown shops that have "dogs welcome" stickers in the windows.
