The trainer that I am considering using said something I'm not sure I agree with or not...He said that i could get a sleeve and start working with the dog myself. Do I want to train my dog to attack and bite on me????!! Is this wise?? I would think that he should not be trained to turn against his owner. He said that if dominance is well enough established that it shouldn't be an issue and that he has never had problems with any of his dogs with that type of training. What do you guys think? Should one always have a helper?
Yes, you can start the work yourself. Going straight to a sleeve may be a bit too much though. Start with smaller, lighter prey items, include a bite pillow in there if you can get/already have one, then move the dog to a sleeve.
The dog can also be worked in this manner by a helper too as you progress along, so that the dog learns the game can be played with other people too. Like Keith said, you shouldn't be doing defense with your own dog, but prey games are ok.
Get this.
It's worth its weight in gold and explains everything you need to know to teach your dog the initial bite work on your own. Equally as important, it teaches you how NOT to mess up your dog in the initial training stages of grip development
Also it sounds like you need to review Ed's article explaining a dog's different drives. Working a dog on yourself in prey does not equate to teaching it "attack training".
When you wear a sleeve (or use a tug) on your own dog, you're just playing a game with him to teach him the skills of biting.
If you want to add defence later on, then a helper would do this (not you, for obvious reasons). Defense and prey are two completely different things; read Ed's articles, watch his DVD's and this will all become very clear to you.
I'm surprised your trainer didn't cover this with you though, especially if he expects you to do bite work yourself with the dog!
Ok in my personal opinion i would never EVER let my dog bite me. But thats my personal opinion :-D
You useing a back tie and a bite bar or a tug isn't a problem but i would stop when it comes to the point of putting the sleeve on my self. I am sorry its just not something i agree with no matter how much dominance you have over your dog. Like i said my personal opinion here so i am going to go read "Preparing your dog for the helper with Bernhard Flinks" and Ed's articles on this subject. Its a good question.
If you know what your doing it is much better to do this work yourself then to have someone else do it. If you don't know what your doing then It's a good idea not to. It is very easy to do the wrong thing without knowing it. e.g. your body positioning.
