I understand a lot of the info on not too much stress put on pups for downhill and jumping when they are young but I was wondering if uphill exercise falls under the same category? I only ask because downhill is stressed so much and I feel that uphill would build muscle and stamina. I am moving to a house that has slopes for landscape and I think a lot of puppy energy can be burned running up after me on them but obviously I don't want to put too much pressure on my pup's joints. I do understand moderation but my question is really just uphill vs downhill and is it safe.
I would say watch your puppy's activity level. Watch when he's just playing around, see how long he lasts on his own without much running around on your part. Then you'll get a feeling for how much he can do before he wants to lay down and rest. He'll sleep a lot in the beginning and needs to.
Then when you have a handle on how much he can do before he gets tired, let him run up the slopes once or twice, and walk back down, although I don't think a small run down a gentle slope is going to bother anything. Just don't "make" him do it. Let him do what comes naturally to puppies, romping around, etc. I don't see any harm in walking or gentle running down some gentle slopes. He'll burn the energy just doing what he as a puppy is driven to do
I understood that a pup shouldn't get the same amount of exercise that an adult dog gets just because the pup is still growing and too much walking or running isn't good for their hips and bones.
