So here's my "problem": I feel as though my dog is ready for the next step of bitework. He's 2+ years old, has seen one bite session before and his grip and everything was great, as is it on the tug. But I'm itchin to do more. I'm in college so money is real tight, and I'm having a hard time finding cheap training options around here with helpers, so doing as much as humanly possible myself (which I've been doing to this point) is the best way to go.
Mostly for funs sake, I really wanna get some new bite toys (pillows, sleeves, etc) but I don't wanna set any bad habits.
I felt like doing back tie work was the next step. Except after seeing "Preparing Your Dog for the Helper" I'm still confused as to whether or not a good biting dog needs that work, and what the overall point of it is.
I'm basically lookin for new ideas to do bitework myself with my dog...and get to use some new toys .
One of the main reasons for back tying the dog is control and safety. Knowing exactly where the radius is allows the helper to be more relaxed and free to be bolder as he knows how far the dog can go. Its also a good way to build grip and commitment as well as launching prowess (with a bungee).
Jeff,
The point of doing the back tie and bite work with just you and your dog as in the "Preparing Your Dog for The Helper" was explained by Bernhard as follows:
There's more to bite work then just the grip - there's positioning and targeting, there's the "strike", there's the point that the dog learns to hand on while put into an escape or into the "pocket".
Those are all important and your dog learning all that saves a ton of time on the club helper.
Bernhard was adamant that he would not do helper work on his own club dogs unless the owners took the time and effort to do this training beforehand.
