This can be bought online, just thought I'd share this gadget with everyone on the forum. I think I posted the story about the missing K9 in March, obviously if you watch the video, they say he was never found.
Unfortunately, the term "GPS" is thrown around a lot these days. Most are dependent on cellular networks (OnStar, for example) and are not truly 100% satellite based. This one is radio-assisted, and you have to be within 1 mile of the collar to track it. But it still could be handy.
Now if they could just get something like this down to a size that fit on a collar, you'd be able to track them anywhere:
The Garmin Astro is a GPS tracking device designed for hunting / SAR dogs. It fits on a collar and communicates with a handheld GPS. It recently came on the market.
Range, of course, would be limited. I would love to have one - it is about the same cost as a radio collar set up but with much more information.

So, they use GPS to get the coordinates but they use RF (Radio Frequency) to communicate with the handset? That makes sense...GPS isn't a message carrying protocol. Aside from RF / Cell Phone network, I can't think of any other way to do this. Cogito, there probably aren't ANY that DON'T rely on something other than GPS. But this doesn't mean that they also don't use the GP Satellites.

Edit reason: guder spleling.
actually, that unit that i linked uses GPS to acquire its location, then relays it through a commercial satellite system – no cell network or radio frequencies required. and it has a real time tracking function.
apparently it made a pretty big splash at the outdoor retailers trade show in salt lake city a few weeks ago. the press release goes into more detail.
of course, it's not something that would fit on a dog's collar. but it's a pretty cool step for that type of technology.
