I guess this is the best forum to post this. My major concern with the raw diet is if my 19 week old GSD pup happens to start choking on a bone. Right now he only gets raw chicken wings, but I plan on picking up some necks and backs this weekend for him. I don't really want to grind them up, since he absolutely LOVES to lay down and chew on them.
He's not a gulper, he does chew nicely on them. I always keep a close eye on him when he's eating bones, but here's my question, since I have no idea what to do in this situation.
What should I do if he starts choking? I know what to do when a human starts to choke, but not a pup...
I knew a dog that choked on a piece of kibble awhile ago, so I put my hands on both sides of her ribs and pumped them like a fireplace bellows... and the kibble shot right out like a bullet. I don't thing that would work with the irregular shape of a bone, however...
So, you vet-types and/or experts out there, could you give me a clear procedure to do just in case? I'd much rather know and be prepared than run around in a panic looking for the pet emergency hotline phone number on my refridgerator...
I have seen dogs choke on kibble and they just normally just throw it back up. In the three years I have feed raw, (chicken of all parts) I have had a dog ckoke on a piece of rib bone (chicken) and he just horked it back up. I really don't see it as a problem.
That's good to know, however I would still like to know what to do just in case. Maybe it would be a toy, or a bone he got over-enthusiastic with. I just have no idea what to do in the case that something gets lodged in his windpipe or anywhere that blocks his breathing...
