Any good articles/websites on perfecting a FAST down? I need better downs both on the pause table in agility and now I need to get down-on-recall for Graduate Novice for my school's obedience class. She totally understands 'down' and does it quickly, just not SUPER FAST which is what I want. (Perfectionist alert!)
So any tips, articles, books, websites, etc. would be much appreciated. She and I are 'clicker-savy' but I do also use corrections in training, so I'm willing to consider any way it's suggested.
Well, today I just sorta flutzed around with her. We had worked on heeling in the park by my boyfriend's house (high distraction: Rottweiler lunging at very secure fence, supervised young children playing nearby, etc.) and I just ran about with her on the basketball court and on a whim I'd tell her to down. As soon as her elbows hit the ground, I clicked and gave her a treat. Then we'd sprint off in another direction. Down! Click, cookie. We probably did this about 20 times and she had a blast.
I'm also being sure to mix-in a LOT of recalls without downs so that she doesn't anticipate them. I don't want to lose the speed.
