Hi, I have a couple of question about Hiccup's and my pup jumping up on me. My GSD pup is now a little over 3 months old.
#1: She Hiccups at least 3 times a day. Is this normal??
#2: I saw a thread about dogs jumping up on people but really didnt say what to do when a puppy jumps up on you. I have thought that the reason she jumps up on me is because she is happy to see me. Or sometimes when we walk by strangers she seems scared and will jump up on me.

If a pup is happy to see me and is jumping, I do not correct, I redirect to something else that is really fun to do, like a toy or I will actually jog away really quick and call the pup and praise for following or coming to me. I praise before the pup can jump.
If the pup jumps on me out of fear or nervousness, I take the pup away form whatever is making them nervous (and yes people approaching a young pup can make them nervous) and play with the pup. I do not take them completely away, just far enough to where they are comfortable and I do something fun with them. If they want to go back and investigate I encourage that and if they start acting nervous again, I do not speak to them, I just repeat the process.
If you coddle a young pup when they are nervous or scared, you reinforce that it is okay to be nervous or scared. If you say nothing and reward confident behavior, the pup will learn (hopefully) that it is good to be confident.
I think the hiccups are normal. My Mal got them all the time when she was that age.

I like to keep a leash on my young pups and stand on it when they go to jump. It prevents the jumping and they usually sit to figure it out and that is when I get down to their level and praise. Or I use it as a perfect opportunity to reinforce sit by marking it as soon as it happens and rewarding with a treat. They catch on quickly thst sitting is a much more rewarding way to greet you and if the jumping is prevented it fades pretty quickly.
I've never tried Carol's teaching of come but that sounds like a great idea! Does anyone have a puppy I can practice with? As far as jumping from being nervous Carol's advice is very sound.
Puppies are such sponges. I love a situation like this, where you can not only start setting a boundary (no jumping) but can also imprint a little obedience. Good God, could I be feeling the urge for another puppy......NOOOOOOOOO!!!
I have a litter of 2 week old puppies and I saw one of them hiccuping the other day. I think it happens when they drink too fast. I would not be worried about hiccuping.
Thanks everyone for the advice. I feel better especially about the hiccups. Ill work on the jumping, wasnt sure if I should start working on that now, or wait.
