I have question about crating. since Im an average joe like most guys, I work for 8 hours which means my pup is home for a little longer. he is currently an outside dog and I have him in a 8'x 6' kennel. I'd like to crate train him, but Im pretty sure 10 hrs in a crate is too long for a 11 week old puppy. is crating possible in my situation? I leave for work at about 5am and get home by 4pm. I thought about trying to leave him in a kennel during the day, then when I get home get the crate involved. play with him, exercise, then feed him in the crate. after feeding, take him straight to the grassy area where I want him to eliminate. any ideas??

Collin, since the pup is already used to being outdoors and in the outdoor kennel, that's where I would leave him during the hours you're gone (unless there would be a potential for someone stealing him).
Your plan when you get home sounds good, but just remember if you want him to stay crated during the night, you'll have to let him out a few times to potty between the time you get home and your bedtime. You'll also have to get up in the middle of the night to let him out of the crate to potty until he gets a little older.
However, if you're just trying to get him used to being in a crate, you'll want him to stay in there longer than just for a meal. So after feeding him in there and taking him outside to potty, put him back in the crate for a while, extending the time gradually to a couple of hours or more.
If I understand your post correctly, you just want to train him to accept being in a crate, and that he'll usually be in the outdoor kennel rather than in a crate indoors.

thank you for the suggestion. yes I want him to get used to a crate. eventually, I'd like to make sure he goes potty on the grassy area rather than on our cement patio where his kennel is for now.
oh and thanks for the welcome... I know it was kind of rude for me to just jump on and start shooting questions without an introduction...hehe. I'll go post one up in another forum... I'll go look for an intro forum.
