Anyone have thoughts on whether vigorous air-licking sessions are something to correct (verbally) or something to be concerned about?
An adoptee from a year ago has times when he will sit on his mat and air-lick like crazy for 30 minutes or more.
I was saying "No" and marking when he stopped, and the behavior was lessening (at least, in my sight). Then someone at our club mentioned that he thought his dog did it when he was congested from inhalant allergies.... and that maybe my dog was now just hiding it from me.
This dog does have mild occasional inhalant allergies, but no runny eyes or congestion that I've ever seen.
Sheesh, I don't know about air-licking. I wish someone could tell me what to do about good ole fashioned people licking. My lab obsessively licks! Wouldn't be so bad if he didn't eat poo on occasion. YUCK!
Epilepsy and obsessive compulsive disorder are two other possibilities. I'm including a link that has some preliminary findings in a research project about canine epilepsy. Air-licking may actually be seizure activity.....interesting reading. http://mastiff.org/exhibit-hall/health/epinews.mv
Call me a softy but I tend to be lenient with the Senior dogs. I figure they've earned a couple of breaks. So personally I wouldn't correct for this.
You'll probably find this interesting the NIH recently approved using the dog model to research allergies. I haven't heard of any ongoing or pending studies but I am keeping my eyes open.

I had been thinking of fending off an OCD when I verbally corrected. Now I guess I am going to distract him instead, since it looks like there can be triggers he does not control.
Jean Dodds does ongoing vaccinosis research, but you're right: We need more.
