Well I'm glad to hear that my dog isn't the only one with this issue. He used to hate my own floors but has overcome it completely. The only time he ever has issues at home these days is when he is excited to go somewhere and then you will see that flintstone thing happening. It also doesn't take him very long to overcome the fear once we are there but I have to admit that I have wondered about hips. What is the likelyhood of a dog that has five generations of no hip issues, actually having hip issues? No doubt, this is one of my greatest fears. Honestly, you would have to put a jacket on me and just throw away the key if this were the case. It would kill me.
Robbin, I'd start with the drive work for his orbee ball like we talked about, and Matt and Howard mentioned. His love for that ball will probably overcome his feeling on the floor. Just a bite or 2 at first, don't work up to a bite, just give him the bite right away when he goes for it. IF he slips, don't stop to go to him and don't make a big deal of it, continue to give him at least one more bite, then make a big deal of his success. Build his confidence on the floor.
And I sure wouldn't worry about his hips at this point. For one, he hasn't been x-rayed and secondly he hasn't shown obvious signs of hip dysplasia. As my Mom used to say, don't cross the bridge until you get to it.
