I asked for advice here about early am barfies. The guys recommended that I feed him later so that he didn't go all those hours with an empty stomach (I feed him around 1PM). Since then I've had no 'accidents'. Just something to keep in mind. I'm glad your dog is better.
Thanks Richard! I am pretty sure that I wrote you a VERY long and detailed response to the early morning barfies coming from my own experience with them!!!
I have followed my own advice and fed him a larger meal at night and have pushed it back a bit. So far so good! Glad it has worked out for your dog too
I'd still take a stool sample to your vet when you get home. There are two intestinal parasites that are common in Ontario and if your guy was into the puddles there's a decent chance he may have one. One was the one that Connie had mentioned and there was another that started with T (I think). My girl got the G one and had all the same stuff as yours... long lasting poopies and the odd drops of blood. My vet also let me know that this was a prticularily bad year for both of those parasites.
Brad . and Connie,
Good advice for sure. When I get home he is due for his yearly bloodwork and I have them do a fecal as well.
His stools remain normal since the fast and the one bile barf seems isolated enough. If we get runny again, the stool sample will go to a vet BEFORE I get back to BC.
I might have thought giardia would produce paler stools than the ones he was having, but you never know. I also know that it can only be detected in a fecal exam at certain stages. It has gone around in BC this year as well, with a collegue's dog winding up with it. I am sure that there are a # of bugs here he would not have as much immunity to as he would back home.
For some reason I am leading to the issue being food related, bacterial or something rich like the new pork spleen and liver set him off. I am glad the fast worked, but have not let my guard down and will not hesitate should the symptoms return to take him in to a vet.
By the way Brad . , what antibiotic did the vet prescribe for the big G and did it resolve with the first round of antibiotics? Just curious...
