My male dog Brutus paces a lot when he's inside even after long walks. He's crated part of the day, we also have a "dog pen" in the basement where the dogs hang out when they're not crated, but sometimes they hang out upstairs with us and there he paces a lot. Eventually he settles down but after a long time.
He sleeps in the bedroom with us and at the begining it was pacing non stop. He was driving us crazy Now he sleeps like a baby. But gets up super early and starts pacing.
My active dogs like to pace too; but when it's time to chill out and relax, they get a "place" command to go lie down. Eventually they usually fall asleep.
Mike, he's definetly not nervous at all. High energy yes! Loves to work.
Steve, I walk my dogs twice a day for about an hour each time. A lot of the times halfway through the walk we'll play with the ball so they have a time to run or we'll play play with the bite pillow. On Sundays we do training for sport and protection.
Unfortunately the weather has been crappy so we mostly have been walking latley...
If you want to go crazy, stick my Dutchie in a kennel run. I think she'd sooner die than stop pacing. She does this back and forth in the kennel over and over at a high speed making these panting squeeking noises that slowly escalate louder and louder. I can't keep her in the run anymore, she has to either be in the house or a crate. She won't stop doing this no matter how much exercise she's had, how hot she is or how tired she may be, she will do it for 4 hours straight. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.
The only place she lies down and relaxes is when I close the bedroom door, she'll hop up on the bed and sleep. Anywhere else in the house she will pace all day long, front door to back door to windows to bedroom to windows to front door to kitchen to kitchen, more kitchen, look for food, kitchen, back and forth, kitchen.... front door, back to the kitchen..... LOL.
But she's so cute and has a really feminine walk so it's OK.
I can understand Mike. I also use the crate during parts of the day. I've read here and a couple trainers have said it's a good thing. He seems to at least relax while in there.
