Has anyone had experience with the products they sell on line that are supposed to help slow down the progression of bone cancer in dogs? My 7 year old Rottie has just been diagnosed. I have no idea what to expect. The vet only recommened amputation and chemo, but said even with that there is only a chance of my dog surviving an addtional year. I don't think it is worth it to put her through that.

Terry, I'm so sorry about your Rottie. It's such a tough diagnosis to hear. I can only speak from my own experience, as I have no veterinary training, but maybe it will help.
My Greyhound was diagnosed with bone-cancer back in April, and wasn't expected to live to his birthday in August. Here it is, November, and he's still doing well. I feel lucky. I was given the same options you were: amputation and chemo. I chose not to do either because amputation is only for pain management; it does not 'remove' the cancer, and the pain for my dog can be managed by meds.
My dog is an older guy, and has a VERY nervous/snarky temperament, so visits to the vet for chemo would put him through a LOT of stress. I chose to keep him comfortable as long as possible so he could enjoy the rest of his life. How you decide to treat cancer is a very personal decision, there is no right or wrong way to go as long as you're keeping the best interest of your dog in mind.
In addition to the pain meds, I give my dog glycosamine, condroitin, raishe (sp?) mushroom complex (an immune booster) and an herb called artemisinine. They are doing studies with artimisinine and how it can benefit in cases of canine osteosarcoma with some encouraging results. There is no guarantee, of course; but my dog was just x-rayed in October and had clear lungs, and a tumor that hadn't grown. You might want to look into trying it for your dog. They talk a bit about it here: Painkiller Suggestions
Good luck; my heart goes out to you. I sent you a PM as well.

My Zorba lived a little over 4 years beyond amputation & chemo. He was His leg was amputated, but not only for pain management. Unfortunately, the cancer has usually already entered the blood stream once diagnosed, so vets will check to see if the cancer has spread into the lungs, and if it hasn't, amputation & chemo are both done to either slow down or stop the spread of the cancer to another vital organ. As it was explained to me by a person whos' leg was amputated for cancer, pain control is a huge part of it, she felt much better once the offending limb was gone.
My dog was put on a vitamin & supplement regimin as well. I will look through my records & post when I find the list.
