Has anyone had an experience with cherry eye in their dog?
Chula has had cherry eye in both eyes (one right after the other) I have had them both operated on, but am not totally thrilled with the results. With one eye in particular, the gland is still protruding quite a bit. I was putting Neo-poly-dex drops in both eyes daily for about a month after the surgery (as per the vet's instructions), but they didn't seem to be helping much. (they are antibiotic drops w/ topical steroid)We were going through 1 small bottle a week at $21 each bottle from the vet, and that adds up...
Is there anything else I could try to help reduce the size of the gland?
The standard fix around here is to pull it out a bit with forceps and snip it off with scissors. The only time they ever have a problem is when there isn't enough snipped off and the cherry will pop out again, another snip takes care of it.
Occasionally a dog will get some irritation (from running through the grass) and that causes a cherry eye to pop out, but it will reduce and be gone the next day on it's own.
If they have a genetic pre-disposition to it I doubt that ointments will help.
In your case it sounds like you are wasting your time and money with the ointment, if it was going to work it would have by now.
I would either get a different vet to snip it off or just live with it the way it is, if it isn't causing problems.
