sue lessner Webboard User Reg: 07-11-2007 Posts: 139 Loc: 35 miles south of chicago Offline	i feed my dog evo red meat,just swithed from regular evo,after this i got a bag of orijen 6 fish and sea veggies,i always mix kibble with a can of meat food,no grain ,like timberwolf or tripe ,whatever.also give raw bones ,lamb shanks,chicken necks. my question is can i mix my raw food with kibble to start?,maybe i should have asked this before i did it,but everything seems to be fine,no tummy upset,he loved it!also use salmon oil and a fasttrack vitamin daily.

You might not want to add a vitamin to commercial foods. The commercial foods are generally "vitamin enriched" or "fortified" and you won't want to double-dose.

Yes, but why? Are you just not sure yet of getting the raw diet right, so you are using commercial as "insurance"? Regardless, half a fresh raw diet is a whole lot better than none.

Personally I'm with Connie and I think it's better to feed kibble and raw at separate meals. Just curious, but why not just dump the kibble and go 100% raw right away? You already know that your dogs have no trouble with the raw, no need to keep feeding the kibble Ditto on the supplementation thing too. You should be cautious when supplementing anything besides salmon oil, vitamin E (in appropriate doses!) and vitamin C. Minerals and lipid-soluble vitamins can easily build up to unhealthy levels if over-supplemented. Edit: nevermind, Connie beat me to it as usual

If 80 lbs is a good weight for him, that would mean about 1.6 to 2.4 lbs of meaty bones a day, depending on his activity level. I never actually weighed anything for my dogs' meals. I just watch their physical condition and make sure that they stay nice and thin (I like to be able to see a hint of rib on them). Some meals are bigger than others but as long as your dog stays in good shape (not too fat or too thin) it doesn't matter if you don't feed the exact same amount every day. Have fun, and lucky you for not having a gluttonous pig-dog

Also, those numbers are not going to work well for you since a 2nd meal of kibble and a can sounds like it would be about half of his daily intake. I started my raw fed GSD on some EVO a while back to prepare her for a short boarding stint. I continue to give her about 1/3 c./day now, mostly to soak up the salmon oil. In my case, a 13# bag last about 3 mos. If you really need to use up the kibble, I'd eliminate the canned meat, decrease the kibble amount and maybe up the raw food amount a little.
