I switched my 9 mo. old over to Innova Evo about a month ago, and so far have been very pleased with the results. I was feeding Wellness before, and his skin had gotten pretty bad - dandruff, super itchy, bumpy, etc. Plus his coat had lost its sheen and had gotten rough. The vet was suggesting meds. Within two weeks on Evo, though, his skin cleared up and now his coat is getting shiny and soft again. I'm very pleased.
The only thing I don't like is that he doesn't attack the food like he used to. Plus now he seems to be hungry all the time. I'm thinking about adding some raw food to his diet, maybe 25% so he'll like it more, and maybe that will get some additional bulk in the food as well. I've read not to mix the two, but the bag says it's o.k.
So since the food is basically a dehydrated raw diet, does that make it o.k. to mix with raw? If so, what would be the best thing to add? (Please keep in mind the convenience factor, which is why he isn't on raw all together.)
Also, the Evo is supplemented with E, C and Omega-3 already. Are there any additional supplements I should add?
I kinda have the same question. Ive been feedin purely RAW to my 9 month PUG since he was 4mo. I just got a 7 wk mini pin who went right to the RAW and gobbled it up. The breeder was feeding Puppy Chow. I would like to continue feeding RAW but its a bit expensive so I decided to change to INNOVA since it was on LEERBURGs list of recommended kibble. I was wanting feed both RAW and INNOVA. But also wanted to know if INNOVA will have the same 'output' amount as regular kibble or will it be comparable to a pup on a RAW diet? It says its highly digestable.
How expensive can it be to feed a pug and a minature pincher a raw diet? My opinion: You'd be wasting your money buying an expensive kibble. Damn I wish I only had your two dogs to feed! I'd have all kinds of money in my wallet
You know I too had the same problem (not with that food) but not going to RAW becuse I was just too busy and it seemed a hassle etc. I recently switched to RAW and even though the first time I "attempted" it, I felt like it was too much work, now I realize I just needed to be more organized. I buy my food a week at a time since I have no freezer storage . I buy the 10 lb bags of chicken quarters and I put one in the freezer and I thaw one out. Seperate them into "individual meal freezer bags." So example: he eats twice a day so one bag will have everything I need in it. Two leg quarters a whole egg and some veggies plus his supplement pills. All I have to do is tell him to bring his bowl and hes at the door in seconds. I pour the bag in the bowl and Im done. I prepare his food a week ahead of time or sometimes a couple of days ahead of time. For me it costs about the same as a high quality kibble. I took me one failure (all on my part) then I managed to switch and couldnt be happier!
I was mixing Innova Evo with my adult dog's food and noticed that some of his poop is hard, like rocks, while the rest becomes sort of like diarrhea. I don't know if it's caused by the Evo, or something else, but I also read not to mix kibble and raw together because of the different rates of digestion. So I'll just use up this last bag of Evo and Firstmate for my pup and then go completely raw.
Yeah, the convenience thing was a hassle for me...I fed raw to my cats before, but had to use beef with bonemeal since they didn't like chicken, and I didn't like the amount of work put into it (they're on Chicken Soup now). But the dogs are a different story. I can get a bag of like six or so chicken backs for 2 dollars, I just take a couple and cut it up, cut up supplements, mush some tripe into gravy, add some veggies...was actually easier than I thought. And quite fun.
