OK, I am not a vet but licking up hair from the floor is definitely NOT normal behavior. If I saw one of my dogs do this, I would be contacting my homeopath for help.
Here's an article I found my doing a google search on rabies miasm. Licking of unusual objects is one of the symptoms they mention in the article. The tail biting is probably linked to the frustration in conjunction with the miasm.
Ive got an OCD mutilating girl here, she has skin problems and ear problems and chemical sensitivities as well.
It started with what amounted to a ruining of her immune system by combining steroids, a 5 way vaccine and a shot of antibiotics all at once when she was being seen for a skin problem after swimming in some very nasty stagnant water.
Her front teeth are worn down horribly from the years of nibbling, she is missing one nipple because she wouldnt leave it alone after getting a cut on it and basically chewed it off.
She also has a large fatty tumor or cyst, or something, on her side but there isnt a damn thing i can do about it because a biopsy would require causing a wound and even if we had it biopsied we couldnt do surgery or chemo on this dog. Last time she had on an E collar she nearly broke her shoulder ramming it into the wall to try to get the collar off she is my high needs girl and is neurotic and very expensive.
so long story short, dont let the biting or itching turn into a habit or self soothing behavior, and really really try to figure out what is at the bottom of it because self mutilating behaviors can cause real problems down the road.
