Hello, i have a 14 month rott with a undershot jaw. He has two small grooves in his roof where his lower canines fit in, slightly pushing his upper canines away. Vet is happy with them, it seems to cause him no discomfort. Have been told while the jaw is alot better than when i got him at 7 weeks it will never fully grow out.
Are there any future complications i should expect? Is the condition hereditary? Will it affect his bite work? Hes doing ok so far.
Just said that it may or may not grow out. They said if it stays major he may need op to take out is canines but that has not been the case. He loves tug of way and bite work so far. These though are show people with no idea of working dogs and are not keen on schutzhund etc so dont want to raise the issue of bite work with them.
As for breeding they gave me the impression it would be heriditary so there is a breeding ban on his KC papers unless i can get them to lift it, but im not planning on breeding him, just curious.
As to bitework, I would imagine it would depend on the degree of the underbite. You would want to ensure that a dog that is potentially "snapping" when the helper purposely causes the dog to miss the bite in training is not injuring his mouth. I have always been told that by the time the dog is a year, what you have is what you are in all likelihood going to have for life bitewise. Do you have a club in your area that you are working with that might be able to advise you after looking at the bite? If there are breeders in the club they might have some good feedback for you.
Thanks Ingrid, very informative site.
Yes he gos to a schutzhund club and they are very happy with his bite work and say pretty much the same. Am just getting as much info as possible on the condition as i want to avoid any future problems.
