Lucy is due, or overdue, for her one year vet visit. Is there anything specific that you ask to be done during visits?
She is fed combination raw and THK. I thought I heard someone mention that they request a full blood workup everyear just to make sure everything is ok.
She had minimual puppy vaccines, nothing but rabies after 12 weeks. I have heard the term titers used frequently. What tests do you have done on a regular basis for this?
Just want to make sure we don't forget anything and don't let the vet do anything unnecessary.
Keith,
Here's what I expect my vet to do during our annual visits (we have 2 dogs, both raw fed and no vaccines other than rabies): check heart, lungs, eyes, ears, teeth, skin and coat condition, thoroughly palpate lymph nodes and abdomen, and check generally for any lumps and bumps. For the 3 year old GSD that's pretty much it as he is in robust health. For the 12 year old Airedale mix I have a full blood panel done every year - I like to do this with senior dogs (over 7) and the vet checks his joints (he has some arthritis). Some owners like to get annual blood panels on younger dogs - personally I do this only if I have reason to be concerned about something.
Hope this helps.
Sarah
Keith,
Forgot one other thing: I expect the dog to be weighed and the weight recorded, and I always get a copy of the examination results and vet's notes (including any blood work) for my own files. Knowing what your dog normally weighs (assuming it is not too fat or too thin) is very useful. Over the years this has alerted me to things like hypothyroidism (the dog gained a lot of weight for no discernible reason), and - sadly - lymphoma when a dog suddenly lost a lot of weight.
