what i was relating was a nearly 40 year history of having GSDs with this allergy, and the things i have tried to control it. the steroids were with my dogs in california...not done that with any out here, because until anja, i thought i had left this problem behind. the only things we have tried so far have been
*coat conditioning/grooming
*food changes
and now
benadryl, and coat conditioner supplement and shampoo from the vet.
With unclear skin problems you have to get creative to find reasons and solutions, or help.
There are better choices than Benadryl, I use Tavist, not Tavist D and it works much better for Nico.
A varied diet seems to help, to much of any single food and she flairs up.
Probiotics, probiotics, probiotics
Rinsing affected area as often as needed, with clear water only, sometimes daily.
Neurotic Flea control
Look at chemical sensitivities to cleaners, shampoo, medicine, household pullutants, bedding material
avoiding steroids, growth hormones and antibiotics in her food. So no Tyson chicken, cheap kibble, generic milk or yogurt.
hmmm. that reminds me of part of her grooming routine that somehow got dropped a while back...don't laugh, but i usually groom her in the bathroom while 'occupied', and keep her zoom groom, rake, brush, clippers and all in there. one thing i used to do was take baby wipes, put it over the zoomer, and scrub her with it daily...with an SD, you want them to be as clean as you are, when working them in public, so i've always wiped them down good daily when we are going out. but since i've been housebound due to health problems, i haven't done the 'zoom scrub' for a while, i guess. wonder if that is part of the problem....? certainly can't hurt to resume!
