When the temps drop to under 10deg F Lucy seems to have a lot of trouble with the pads on her paws freezing up even after short periods outside.
I know dog booties would work but I am looking for something that you can put on every few days that would protect from this.
I have heard positive things on Mushers Wax but have some concerns.
1) How effective mushers wax against road salt, ice, etc.
2) How often does it need to be applied typically?
3) Once inside again does it rub off on carpet, furniture (she hasn't learned to stay off completely yet)? If it does rub off any staining issues?
I use Musher's Secret on my girl and it works really well against the salt. I forgot to put it on her this morning and she had some issues with the extreme cold and salt.
I only apply it when it is going to be really cold or when we have just had a snow/ice storm. I'm not sure about it's normal wear life if someone else knows that would be great.
As far as staining goes I haven't noticed any but I can't honestly say that I've looked either. With 6 dogs in the house we've pretty much decorated in dog resistant colors.
i used corona hoof creme on my guys when i was in MN and took them jogging all winter long. my best advice would be to wash her feet if she gets exposed to salt or chemical 'snow-melt' at all, cause that stuff is pretty nasty. i have always been happy with the corona creme when conditioning my dogs for road work, or anything else...

Very effective, Most people will give the foot a dip in a small bucket of warm h20 coming back into the house at the door or at the least give the feet a wipe with a wet rag. Me .. I just take the dog into the back yard so she can run a bit on fresh non affected snow to rinse off any salt. (I'm lazy like that) She doesn't get ice balls on her feet either, or none that I've had to deal with so far this winter.

Before you go for any big walk I usually just apply it in the AM and forget to apply any extra during the days extra walks or runs. I can rub up my dogs pads and toes with the Mushers secret and be out the door in about 45 seconds. The jar lasts a long time as you don't need a lot of it to be effective. Usually the size of 1/2 a teaspoon does all 4 paws on my Malinois.
The application is not going to last for days more like a few hours. Especially if she walks on carpet it will be gone in no time. You might as well rub it off with a rag, same concept. Just reapply if you know you are going to be out again for a long time on salt and deicer chemicals.

I don't notice any staining even if she jumps into the car onto the seats. The main ingredient I understand is natural beeswax.
