I did a search and didn't locate the information I was looking for, so I though I would ask. I have a healthy 4 year old male, neutered GSD who has been on a raw diet for over a year. In the past couple of months, he has, on his own, expressed his anal glands. I have seen it while he has pooped (sorry for the graphics) but also during the night in the kennel. I can usually smell it (can you say skunk)but I can see the discoloration of his light fur by his butt. It is an oily substance...yuck. Is this normal? If yes, what can I do to easily clean it up? If not, any idea of what might be causing it?
Thank you for all the great information you guys have posted in the past!
It is normal for a dog to express his glands when he defecates and when he is extremely frightened. Not sure about just randomly when he is in his crate. Is anything scaring him? Is he generally easily frightened? If not, it could be caused by an infection or something. I would call the vet and ask them what they think.
Oh, I've always had success with peroxide to clean it from surfaces (don't use on colored clothing or upholstry!) it usually removes the discoloration and the smell. Might work on fur too, just be sure to wash it off so he doesn't lick it off, if he gets enough it will make him vomit.
Thank you for that advise. Nah, he isn't easily frightened and it has happened only once in the crate. I am on vacation in WI, so I haven't called the vet yet...I will call them tomorrow and schedule a visit if it is needed when I get back.
If it isn't a recurring thing in the crate, you may not have to worry about it, but talking to the vet should at least ease your mind :-) I just wouldn't pay for an office visit for a one time occurrance.
