OK so for those of you who have read this thread, I have decided to tape my 19-week (4 month) old's ears. He is a mixed breed with smaller than normal ears (takes after his mom who has Jack Russell in her). In the other thread I included a photo of his littermate with normal sized drop ears, to illustrate that his ears are smaller and therefore less heavy, (they kind of stand out on their own anyway) so I think taping them might work. I am *not* considering cropping.
So anyway i went out and bought some skin bond, moleskin, and tape and got to work. The first time I just tried sticking the moleskin in his ears with the self-adhesive, then taping the ears together with paper tape (like the method Ed uses in the article on this site). I spent about 20 minutes putting it on and the dog took about 5 seconds to rip it off.
Plan B. The next day I got skin bond and used that to glue the moleskin (braced with Q-tips) into the pups ears. I followed the directions on the skin bond bottle. Again, the braces lasted 5 seconds. This time the dog freaked out like he was terrified of the things in his ears. He shook his head violently, pawed at his ears, rubbed his head on the ground and ran around frantically. Needless to say the braces flew out.
Okay people, I know some of you have done this before. Obviously I am doing this wrong. So what can I do that will stay in his ear and NOT drive him crazy? And how do I tape the ears together over the top of his head that he will not rip off in 5 seconds.
I used the Nexcare tape method on one dog and it didn't seem to bother him at all except for the first time when I got the tape too far down in his ear. The tape sticks very well and is light weight, two layers or tape worked very well. I never did a bridge.
If he is going to need multipel layers you might start with two layers, let him get used to it then add more.
I think Jenni said that she could see her dog's ears go up some after every egg he ate with the shell. Sounds like a good idea to me. Feeding raw cartledge (windpipes) might do the same thing. http://www.boston-terriers.com/ears.htm
