Hi all
Just got back from vet, everyone got blood drawn for heartworm test and the senior gal is getting a full work-up since she's turning 15 in a couple of weeks. My question is this; does anyone know of a lab I can have the blood sent to for the other 2 to get rabies titers tested? My vet will have to send it out and it's going to cost 110.00 per dog. Is this average price? So far all the vets I've called in the area (once I explain what titers are!) are either saying it can't be done or that it'll cost more than that to have done.
Help?
Sadly, titers are just plain expensive. We had one done for Oscar when we thought we were moving overseas last fall - over $200, between the vet visit/blood draw and actual testing!! And we didn't end up leaving the country afterall!!
I believe Kansas State University is the nationally recognized hub for this type of testing - it's USDA approved (which is the only type that's allowed for travel/import paperwork). I'll look up my paperwork and see if I can find a contact...

That price sounds about right, IME.
Conventional vets very rarely do titre testing so most are unfamiliar with the cost and procedure for it. If a vet uses an outside lab (and most do) they CAN do titre testing.
There are 2 labs, 1 in Kansas and 1 in Texas, who do rabies titre testing. If they will do it, independent of a vet, I don't know.
Thanks much! I just called my vet with the Dodd's site info and she said that my guys are good for another 2 years.....evidently the law here in TX is every 3 years for rabies. So I'll get to wait a while before having to go thru all this again. She will be able to give me a certificate if the titers come back ok....whew!
thanks again!
Thanks Peggy, that's the one. We live in Austin and my vet said they recently changed the law to every 3 years but most of the veterinary community doesn't talk about it because compliance is only about 40% even with people she called "conscientious owners".
I had to get my 5 year old gsd a rabies shot last year at this time because the shelter we were adopting from had that as a requirement. The folks at the shelter all said the dogs have to get them evry year which was my concern....I won't do it unless I have to. Now I know I can go ahead and get titers done in future and have the certificate so hopefully no more vaccines for anyone. My 14 year old sheltie mix was exempted from this because of her age. It's very frustrating to have to deal with so much misinformation when the truth is so easily accessed!
