Okay, I *know* there are some of you out there who have taped their pups ears to stand up. Someone posted just recently, I can remember the photo of the pup and that he was a plush coat GSD but do you think I could find the post? no.
My question is how long after taping the puppy's ears will he stop freaking out? (As in, scared and fearful freaking out, like the ear gadgets are going to bite him or something). I have tried to tape my puppy's ears three times now and each time he freaked out so bad that I took the tape off. He will be 5 months old tomorrow.
For the record, he is a mixed breed, so I will probably have to leave the tape on for several weeks (with breaks of course).
At least if I know he will eventually accept the tape/glue, I could hold off taking it off. But he breaks my heart. I know it isn't causing him any pain though, I don't know what his problem is???
Can anyone else share their taping experience with me please?
I'll say it first; Is he done teething? You should probably wait untill then. Also maybe his ears arent suppposed to stand since he is a mix. I'm sure you have thought of those things anyway. I like glue much, much, better than tape. Glueing pipe insulation in is about the best thing I've ever seen, except for maybe dogs who's ears have been cropped. As far as excepting it, that would depend on the dog's temperment. My Bond got over it after 2 sessions. My other wines about it every time for about a day then he gets over it.
Hasn't anyone had a dog that just flips? I mean starts running like he is trying to get away, and when you hold on to him he rubs his head all over trying to get the horrid ear inserts out. I guess most puppies just accept the glue?
I tried taping but it took me 15 minutes to get the tape on and 2 seconds for him to get it off. The glue, he act like he is terrified. I am just wondering if ths is a normal reaction that he will get over in a day, or if it is maybe too much for him? He's not in pain at all and I was really careful every time I did it to make it as comfortable as possible.
I guess my question is what is a normal reaction to having something glued into his ears. If he is freaking out more than a normal puppy would, I will just give up. However, if it is normal for them to freak out in the first day or so, I will keep trying.
I responded to your PM before I saw this post. You can PM me again if you still have questions...I agree w/Matthew BTW - I tried several different methods - glue and foam pipe insulation was a piece of cake w/Kodee. I gave him a RMB to work on while I did the gluing process. Then for about the first day, he scratched at it, and I just interrupted him w/a toy or game, and by the 2nd day he forgot all about it. PM me for more details if you need...
Simon would shake his head once in a while and look up when he had the bridge between his ears, like he was trying to determine exactly what that thing was, but he didn't do anything close to freaking out. I wouldn't go any longer than a day if the dog is really terrified, if even that long.
On another note, I have never heard of "breaks" in ear taping; wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose?
I think it is the glue (skin bond). I tried again last night with the foam hair roller and skin bond and the dog freaked out again. I really don't get it. He raced around with his head on the ground and he got the roller out and the tape off, then he cowered frozen in the corner looking terrified.
I had given him a raw beef bone as a distraction and he didn't even look at it.
So, thanks again for your replies, I thought at first I must be doing it wrong. I have learned that this dog will not accept ear glue so I will not try again.
I thought it would be cool if his ears would stand up, and I saw the photos of all the other pups with tape on looking all unconcerned so I thought it wouldn't be a big deal since I wasn't doing surgery. But I guess it is a big deal to the dog and that's what matters.
I used glue remover on his ear and he's back to his old self today. When he grows up he will be a big, noble dog with funny little ears. hehe.
