A client of mine wants reassurance that it is OK to crate the dog 10-11 hours while they work. she feels that the crating and then the on-leash rule will be too much.
her dog is a high energy, untrained 2 year old unneutered GSD that I had to excuse from group class and work with privately. this dog needs the ground work i feel; can anyone make some reassuring points on the limited freedom for her?
why people get dogs if they don't have time for them....?
IMO, at 2 yr old GSD should be able to be crated/kenneled for 10 hrs/day with no problem. I know some people think its 'mean', it's not, it's reality.
If she's concerned about exercise, find a confined area where she can run or swim the dog playing ball. They should lay off the OB during the exercise sessions though, b/c the dog is off-leash and they could not correct the dog for any transgressions.
Hi Michelle - I'm just a novice when it comes to all this, but have been applying Ed's philosophies as much as I can and my 14 month male GSD (working line) has been coming along fabulously. I would recommend that your client watch/purchase Ed's relatively new video on Pack Structure and the Family Dog. It is eye opening for those who don't understand dog behavior/nature and the value of crates and leashes applied together in a holistic program.
By the way, why doesn't your client find someone to walk her dog once during the day and give it water too? As you said, she took on this responsibility knowing she is working all day; and part of that responsibility is to care for the dog properly, even if it costs her a bit extra.
Great suggestions! I agree, I have had many friends who worked and when they got home that was the dogs play time and it worked out fine. Weekends were training time and play time. It takes work to find a schedule for you and your dog when you work, but it pays off.
HOpe the situation works out well. Oh, an idea came to my mind. Does the owner have an outside kennel. Maybe they could get one, place it in a secure location outside, and every once and awhile let the dog go out there for some different atmosphere. Of course, I do not know her neighborhood or the dog.
