So, today I gave my 6 month Aussie her bath, and after the bath I thought would break out the hair dryer to get her used to it, so I can dry her more quickly.
She was curious when it was off, and then I turned it on low to get her used to the noise. I was just sitting on the floor so she could come to me. Everything was fine until I pointed it at her and she completely flipped out. I tried to sooth her "It's okay.. it's just air.." .. I turned it off and on a couple times, but then she started attacking it as soon as it was on. (barking, yiping, jumping at it to bite it) When it's off she just looks at it funny, but when the air is blowing she goes nuts.
I moved it to the bathroom and was just blowing it around out of her reach to dry off the floor, thinking maybe she would get used to the noise, but as soon as I turned it even in her direction she went crazy again and tried to get at it.
My husband tried to get her to calm down just outside of the bathroom, telling her to sit and settle down with marginal success.
She also does this with the hose attachment on the vacuum. Usually I just put her in her crate when I'm cleaning, but I would like to use a hair dryer after her baths, and take her to get groomed from time to time when she's older. (Obviously I can't do that if she can't handle a hair dryer.. heaven knows what she'd do with clippers)
Any thoughts? You guys are so great with suggestions. She's getting more and more defensive about things as she gets older, I'm worried that these are warning signs of bigger problems down the road.
