I have a 10 month old GSD, she is well trained with the basics (sit, stay, come, leave it, the basics), we are currently training for a hike in March; the hiking trails we are training with are equivalent to those we will be doing in March with the exception of snow. Should I do anything special to prepare her for the snow, like boots or just keep her on the schedule extending her miles each week? I am worried about the snow because she has never trained in weather below 32F.
are you worried about distance being physically difficult or comfort levels w/snow? how far are you going? how many days? is there snow on the trails you're training on now?
It is a one day hike, about 6 to 7 miles round trip. There might be snow, you never know in Germany, last time I did the hike (same time of year) there was about 2feet of snow half way up on the trail. The trails we are working on have no snow so that is my worry, I want her to join us on the trip but worry she might get to cold with the wet snow.
i've never had a puppy, so i can't be sure about puppies, overexercise, and this hike, but it sounds like a reasonable distance and hike to me, especially if you're training.
i find my dogs are fine in dry snow, regardless of temperature, however both get balls on their feet in wet snow and while they can still go, aren't as comfortable. has she worn booties before? you might want to get a pair and get her used to them, and then you can carry them in your pack just in case.
I believe that if the dog is fit and health it will have no problem with the distance.....I don't know about the snow.
I have two GSD's and we regularly climb the local hills including Ben Lommond which is 3500ft and a 5 hour round trip(Scotland).
details of some of our traininfg school hikes are on my site if you want to see the type of terrain we cover.
However I would suggest especially if there is a possibility of snow that you go well prepared with the correct equipment.....very easy to get into trouble quickly...look here to see what happened to one of our guys.....started out a nice day then this http://www.cumbernaulddogtraining.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2058
