Hi, I am wondering what the average lifespan of a GSD is. I have read 8-10 years but I havent owned enough of them to know
would the lifespan be shortened by years if they had very bad nutrition and circumstances during puppyhood?
Oh and this is a side but I know feeding raw is easier on the inerds but does it prolong their life noticebley?
8 years seems a little short to me, but 10-12 would probably be an average. I've know of numerous working-line GSDs that lived into the 11-13 year old range. Very poor nutrition would certainly affect longevity, but I believe breeding healthy, well-built dogs with parents and grand-parents that were long-lived contributes more to longevity.
My GSDs averaged 12 years, one lived 13 years, even with varying types of kibbles and canned food (what was available at the time, 50's on, although usually it was the best that was available). I didn't start raw feeding until I got my current GSD, so don't know how or if it will contribute to longevity.
