I was wondering what if anything special I need to do when she comes home.
She will go on march 7th date change.
But what should cange if any in her routine.
I am taking 3 days off work to be with her.
Does eating or anything change after the first day.
More kennel time or anything.
The main question is what cahnges and what I need to do different.
As long as there are no complications with her sx and she has no previous special needs, not much will really change. The night you bring her home from the sx, they generally recommend you offer ice cubes to lick and small amts of water the first few hours after you get home. This is b/c the anesthesia and pre-anesthetics can leave them feeling a bit nauseous. Then you can typically offer a small amount of the regular diet. She may have a decreased appetite the first day or two; as long as she is on pain meds this should resolve.
You will monitor the incision closely for an abnormal swelling, redness or drainage. You will need to keep her from licking or chewing it so an elizabethian collar (lamp shade collar) may need to be used.
Most OHE's will not require a suture removal as most of the Dr's use a dissolvable material. Most incisions take 10-14 days to heal.
You will want to restrict her activity for AT LEAST the first several days... no running, jumping, playing, leash to walk/potty, etc...esp with other dogs so that her incision doesn't get torn.
Your vet should give you discharge instructions that list all of this info too. And just as a side note...and it is my opinion only... please don't take her to a spay and neuter clinic; take her to a regular general practice vet. I work for board certified surgeons and know what really should be going into a sx procedure and anesthetic monitoring... these important aspects can be lax in some clinics. Hope this helps!
