Just wondering if anyone knows what the shelf life of kibble is? Can it be fed up to the expiration date or even past it? I've been doing some research and get conflicting stories. Some say to not feed close to the x date, others say sealed kibble can be fed even 4-6 mos after the x date? Provided it's been checked 1st of course.

Someone else probably has a better grasp of this, but the expiration date/shelf life is more applicable to "sell an unopened container by this date" as opposed to the actual usable life of the kibble once the original package is opened. After opening, variables such as type of storage container, light exposure, storage temperature, air exposure, etc. will decrease the length of time it should be fed to your pet. I think you can email most manufacturers to get a statement as to how long they recommend you feed their kibble after it has been opened. I'm thinkin' I heard about 6 months, assuming you've stored it properly, but don't hold me to that.
Of course, you can always add some Twinkies to the container to increase shelf life by several decades or more. JK!

How would you check it? (You mentioned checking it first.)
I'd check the date in the store and not buy it if it was near or past. If I didn't realize it until I got home, I would take in back with the receipt.
If I had stored it myself for long past the expiration date, I personally would probably chuck it.
I think that rancid fats are a problem with some kibbles from the get-go (that is, some kibbles are sprayed with used "recycled" restaurant Fryalator fat, and many other kibbles are just not fussy about the freshness of the fats they use). If I used kibble, I would buy the freshest packages I could get and I would store it carefully in order not to contribute to any rancidity problems. I would choose a kibble that identified the fat it contained, and I would smell every bag, too, to look for any hint of rancid smell.

Connie, pretty much check it before it's fed. I guess look it over and smell it?
I was wondering because I was going to give my sister lot's of free sample bags of high quality kibble for training treats. I never used them since I feed raw. They are sealed and were stored in a cool, dry place, but the exp on some of the bags show from 12/07-3/08. Some don't have an exp date.
And can someone share the "twinkie" joke? Do they last forever? Lol..they are among my favorites.

MHO: Recent expiration dates like that on a high-quality kibble that had been stored the way you stored these would not worry me. I'd continue to store it carefully, as always (bag closed up, cool dry place).

Ha! Thanks Mike! ...and I think the estimate of 8 million pounds of sugar, is for one box of twinkies.
Connie, thanks for your thoughts. I'll tell my sis to store them in the same way and check before she feeds.
