My Lab can inhale rawhides and will consume long marrow bones so he can't have them.
I have found the large, curvy buffalo knucklebones to be unbreakable....maybe due to their shape and size? For a dog that eats everything, he only gnaws them clean. I give them occasionally and only when I'm home.
Are knucklebones the only bones recommended? I found a butcher that works with beef carcasses and I want to know what kind of bones I can safely request for my dog. He gave rib bones to my husband and I don't think they are safe.

Denise,
I don't know if knucklebones are "safer" than other recreational bones...I know I am more comfortable with them than marrow bones.
I haven't given beef ribs to my dog as an RMB. I remember reading they are pretty hard, so I've avoided it. I've only ever given beef oxtails but I would also be interested to hear what beef bones are recommended.

Is there maybe a blurring there of the meaning of RMB as opposed to recreational bones?
Thanks for the link. I need bones for recreational chewing. I have beef rib bones in the freezer but within 30 minutes my dog is breaking off chunks off the ends and I feel uncomfortable with it. I have given marrow bones in the past which was recommended by my breeder but I read on a forum that somebody's dog had gotten it's jaw/teeth trapped in it. So now I am a bit leery of those.
I want to give my dog something safe to chew and have given raw carrots but that doesn't agree with her stomach.

I read in the "Raw Dog Food" book today (while looking for the bone in water thing) that along with pumpkin, liver is good to give for a dog that is constipated or is straining with stools.

My Beagles do just fine with ribs, the leg bones are too hard to eat. Based on my meat cleaver dissections I don't think ribs and spines are nearly as hard and brittle as leg (weight bearing) bones. Leg bones will break in big chunks/slivers, ribs and spines break into very small short pieces.
There was also a post a while back about the bones from the spinal column being made up of flat sheets rather than long strands (I hope that makes sense) like the weight bearing bones are built.
