Carol I have found that dogs can get use to anything if they wear it for a long enough period of time. I live is South Louisiana and have used them in tracking obedience and protection work without a problem. Norman
Just a matter of preference Norman.
I used them for a whole summer and just did not like them too much.
It might be that the difference is that my dogs travel farther than a track laid for sport or PPD work.
Which also means that I have to stop and take the vest off due to the fact that it has warmed up and is not keeping the dog cool any longer, which causes me to carry another item in my pack, due to the fact that I cannot regenerate them.
Until The Tale of the Lioness is told, the Story will Always Glorfy the Hunter
The fact that Norman uses them in Louisiana makes me want to give it a go. The combination of heat and humidity is double trouble. If these vests can give 1 or 2 hours of relief ( they say they give up to 4 hours)from our summer heat it would well be worth it. I think you can't overestimate our heat problem. I think you can suffer heat stroke in the shade! I have suffered heat stroke while at an equestrian event in Oklahoma. It comes on so fast! Your body has a harder time handling the heat after that.
I too might find them more trouble than their worth. There are times however I think it's to hot just to do basic obedience work or hike on a trail for a couple of hours no matter how early I rise. Our ranch in Ulvalde TX is more of a dry heat, which I find more tolerant(but still hot). I have a home near Galveston where the temperatures are maybe not as hot but when you add the additonal humidity it's miserable!

Summer is a great time to do water work at least for my lab. We spend quite a bit of time on retrieve and then can work on the less fun obedience while she's sopping wet and cool. It's then just a slow walk home and by the time she's there we're mostly dry.
