Recently I recovered from the flu but had a cough that lasted 2 weeks and now I have strep. My JRT (5 months)started coughing and sneezing two days ago. I took him to the vet and he prescribed over the counter allergy medicine. There was concern over kennel cough (he was exposed to another puppy).I talked to the owner of the puppy and he had no symptoms of kennel cough.
Now my GSD is coughing and sneezing!
I started to wonder if it was just a coincidence that they are having respitory problems right after my illness. I have a habit of drinking out of my water bottle and then letting them drink whats left when hiking (not a good idea I guess).
Anyway,is it possible that they are sick because of me?
I have no idea, however, on the ticker (or crawler or whatever they call that thing that runs along the bottom of the TV scrren) it was reported that a woman kept having re-curring MSRA and they finally tracked it to her cat (this was in Germany) and it said something about three dogs testing positive also for the staph germ and transmitting it to their owner. It was on TV tonight. You may be able to google it or something.
Actually, dogs can get Streptococcus just like we do, but there are many strains of it. The only way to find out if you've been passing it back and forth with your pooch is to have the vet take a throat culture and your doctor get one from you and send them out to a microbiologist who will see if it's the same strain as yours.
So to answer the question, is it possible? I'd have to say maybe .
My aunt got a staff infection in her nostrils and in a couple tiny scratches on her neck from her cat. It took some pretty heavy duty antibiotics to clear them both up. She is the most image conscious clean person I have ever met so it wasnt a matter of hygiene. the cat is allergic to mosquitos so he scratched his ears and they got a staff infection, then he rubber on her neck and face and it took hold on her too.
Im glad to know that dogs may be able to pass strep back and forth between their owners.
I get scarlet fever with every single strep A infection and am prone to getting it...I try to avoid it like the plague!
Gone are the days when we never have to worry about giving and recieving illness' from or to our dogs. I guess living in such close quarters and with similar food and water sources it only makes sense.
I am on antibiotics for strep throat after flu and a hacking cough. Now all three of my dogs are on antibiotics for respiratory illness. The vet thought they might have kennel cough even though they have not been exposed to any dog with kennel cough. Personally I feel I transmitted it to them!
I could always count on my dog to stay with me when I was sick or miserable. Oh well, I guess I'll just find that stuffed teddy bear.
