Okay, the vet called back and the puppy tested negative for all parasites...he said he didn't see anything that would lead him to think giardia either.
So...now what?
He told me to just watch the pup...and not to worry too much as long as he is acting normal and eating, drinking...and to watch the other pups too. I'm going to do the bland diet with a bit of pumpkin and see if that helps.
On a different note, he just went diarrhea again, and while it was still very runny, it was a little bit thicker in consistency then it was this morning.
If he has been on albon, which I believe is technically an antibiotic, his flora and fauna are likely all out of wack!
It gave poor Fargo horrid horrid gas the entire time he took it and for a full week afterwards.
I would also do plain yogurt, or kefir or pro-biotic supplements to get his tummy back in balance!
I wouldnt stop it, but I would be aware of the possible side effects. Stopping it early can cause resistant strains of bacteria, although it doesnt actually kill the coccidia it only slows it down and If I remember correctly stops it reproductive systems for a while.
I mixed pedialyte with my pups water while he was taking it because he was water obsessed and I was worried he was over drinking but not properly hydrating due to stress on the kidneys from the medication.
It did upset his tummy but once he was finished with the medication he felt so much better and we havent had any troubles since.
Putting him on extra probiotics helped as well, I gave 1/4 cup of kefir split into three meals, as well as a probiotic supplement twice a day for several weeks, I figured with all the gut troubles he was having he would need a total rebalance.
Now he gets about 1/8 cup of kefir a day but sometimes more because he loves it so much.
The usual dose for albon is 10 days when treating cocidea.
Usually albon will firm up the poop.
I have not seen any of the side effects you listed when my pups were on Albon. But your puppies aren't always going to react the same way mine do.
The probiotics are an excellent idea.
If the poop is slightly green and has a faint metalic smell it could be Giardia, 3 days of double dose fenbendazol will take care of it.
No, I don't think it is giardia. No smell really, and just normal brown color.
I just fed him breakfast (chicken & rice) and he pooped a much more formed stool! Yeah!
