For a puppy don't buy a buckle collar (like a belt buckle). Buy the collar with the plastic (or metal) clippy/snappy thing. the reason is because they are way easier to adjust the size as the pup grows. If you buy the buckle kind it is way harder to get the right fit.
I just got mine at PetSmart. You can get them anywhere. But because it is a sliding adjustment, and not a buckle hole, you can get way more precise fitting and I found my dog didn't out grow it as quickly.

Martingales are nice collars. They give a better correction than a regular collar, but not like a prong. I'd probably use it on a pup that's at least 5-6 mos old. That's about when I got it for my dog. She still uses it today.
So is it not good or safe to use it for a puppy under this age?
The Martingale leash has a collar built into the leash. The collar is much to big for a pup.
The British Lead is a slip lead that will tighten to the pup's neck. We use them when the dog understands the concept of a leash and does not pull too much. A young pup can easily pull too tightly and end up scared of the leash. I used a British Lead on Toni at about 4 or 5 months.

So what do you guys use when you want to quickly put a leash on the puppy to take it outside to go potty? I was watching the pack structure video and Ed uses the martingale to take the dog out to use the bathroom and he says it's a quick and easy way to get a leash on without such a struggle with the dog. Just wondering what I can use to have the same effect with a puppy.
I use the one he sales that slips over their head... http://www.leerburg.com/mendota.htm
I got the British Slip Lead for puppies...it is perfect! I started using it on Delilah with no problems at 12 weeks...she never minded the leash to begin with though.
