My GSD female just turned 8 months old yesterday & has had a hygroma on her left elbow for about one month. I'm trying to avoid surgery so we've been monitoring it & hoping it will go away on it's own. If anyone has any experience with this I would love to hear your suggestions.
We try to pad her crate as much as possible but she is a chewer when left alone so we've had to give up on foam padding. We use blankets or towels in the crate now. She is not lame & does not show pain there even when we touch it.
It has not gotten smaller & another one seems to be starting on her other elbow.
Both my shepherds had them. Both went away without surgery, takes a long while to go away. It was one of those things by the time you get used to it it's gone.
I never drained or treated them just left them alone.
My third German Shepherd Moeshe also has that on one of his elbows. I wouldn't consider doing surgery since it's not good to put a dog under the knife unnecessarily. I've got him on cod liver oil, which he gets daily, and I think it's keeping the hygroma on his elbow small. I didn't use cod liver oil in the past with my other dogs and if nothing else it has given him a lustrous coat and has strengthened his immune system.
