Hello everyone,
I would like some help on how to get Kane(7 mo old GSD)to sit right beside me when we are "heeling" and I stop.
(Im using a clicker and rewarding when hes in position while walking) hes got it really well , but when we stop , he sits and turns his backside outward (he is looking up at me to get his reward, but not right beside me )(ie his front quarters are right beside my left thigh but his bum is quite far away)
Hi Shauna, Are you training him for competition obedience where the sit has to be perfect? At 7 monthes I wouldn't worry to much about perfect sits but you can try using a wall. Heel with your dog between you and the wall (you will need to walk so your dog is very close to the wall). The when you stop, he will not have room to swing his bum out at an angle. Yippee! Good boy!
Hi Sandra,
right now it is basic obedience , but since he was doing so well now with his walking, I added the sit. I am interested in tracking eventually, but know nothing about it so Im just trying to work with him to the best of my ability, and see where that takes us..thank you for the WALL suggestion, I will try that
Shauna
Shauna, I don't know how you're rewarding you dog (dropping, handing, etc.) or what you're using as a reward.
But a dog always wants to get as close as possible to the reward. If he knows the reward is given to him from your front or your right hand (or if he knows that's where you've stashed it) he's going to swing his butt around to be as close to the reward "spot" as possible.
Try moving or stashing the reward more to the left and back a bit (the arm pit often works well ) and see if you notice a difference.
Thank you Amber,
yes I use my right hand, as I have the clicker & leash in my left hand ,stash is in my right pocket, I treat with small pieces of turkey, chicken or whatever left over meat i have (really small pieces)that makes sense that hes trying to be close to the reward, Ill try to be crearive and change it up
